Because of this, it’s important to make healthy choices to strengthen your immune system and reduce the likelihood of illness. Here are six tips to stay healthy year-round.

1. Stay physically active. Exercising as you get older will help reduce the risk for disabilities and age-related diseases. Exercise will keep you active and with consistency, you’ll feel more energetic, too!

Exercise not only alleviates depression but also increases energy and sharpens memory. An exercise routine that is approved by a fitness professional along with walking or short strolls can keep seniors healthier longer.

2. Eat healthy foods. The digestive system slows down as we grow older. In this case, it would be very helpful to eat high-fiber fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Older adults are also prone to dehydration, so drinking plenty of water will help in order to maintain energy.

Good nutrition is the fuel your body needs to function well. You can ask an expert such as a doctor or dietitian to learn more about what food choices you should buy and eat. 

3. Get proper rest. You won’t be able to function well if you’re tired. As much as possible, get between 7 to 8 hours of sleep per night and rest throughout the day. Studies show that sleep deprivation, or sleeping less than five hours a night, can contribute to major health problems. These could include high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and cancer.

Frequent waking and insomnia in the night are common among seniors. Turn the lights down in the evening to spur drowsiness and make sure the senior’s bedroom is comfortable, cool, and quiet.

4. Focus on prevention. Regular checkups can help you stay healthy and avoid unnecessary illness from developing. Preventative care visits such as health screenings for cholesterol levels, colon cancer, heart problems, and more, are the common test that seniors do. Older adults also need to get vaccinations that can help prevent different diseases such as influenza and pneumonia.

5. Keep your mind sharp. Brain health is as important as any other healthy habit, especially as you age. Learning a new skill, practicing word or number puzzles, or reading an interesting book can all help keep your mind sharp. Keeping your brain active with suitable mental challenges can help you stay sharp as you grow older.

6. Managing stress levels. With age can come new stresses from different issues. Research shows that increased stress is linked to different health issues including heart attack, stroke, and other medical conditions. Stress levels should be monitored especially if you are older.

Treat yourself to simple pleasures in order to stay well and happy. Look for ways to manage your stress levels through different activities. Socialize with people, get plenty of sleep, exercise regularly, and appreciate all the little things in life.
